Microstructural and Chemical Analysis of AgI Coatings Used as a Solid Lubricant in Electrical Sliding Contacts
نویسندگان
چکیده
AgI coatings have been deposited by electroplating on Ag plated Cu coupons. Electron microscopy shows that the coatings consist of weakly agglomerated AgI grains. X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry and mass spectrometry show that the AgI exhibits a reversible transformation from hexagonal to cubic phase at 150 °C. AgI starts to decompose at 150 °C with an accelerating rate up to the AgI melting temperature (555 °C), where a complex-bonded hydroxide evaporates. Ag-pin-on-disk testing shows that the iodine addition to Ag decreases the friction coefficient from 1.2 to ~0.4. The contact resistance between AgI and Ag becomes less than 100 μΩ after ~500 operations as the AgI deagglomerates and Ag is exposed on the surface, and remains low * Corresponding author. TiC-based nanocomposite coatings as electrical contacts
This Thesis concerns the advanced surface engineering of novel TiC-based nanocomposite and AgI electrical contact materials. The objective is to make industrially applicable coatings that are electrically conductive and wear-resistant, and have a low coefficient of friction. I have studied electrical contact systems consisting of a Cu substrate with a Ni diffusion barrier and loading support, a...
متن کاملTribological behavior of sputter-deposited MoSX/Ni coatings
AbstractSputtered MoS2 coatings have been mostly used as a solid lubricant. In this investigation, MoSx/Ni composite coatings with Ni contents varying from 0 to 22 % were deposited onto steel substrate using a DC magnetron sputter process. The MoS2/Ni ratio in the coatings was controlled by sputtering the composite targets. The composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the...
متن کاملGraphene as a lubricant on Ag for electrical contact applications
The potential of graphene as a solid lubricant in sliding Ag-based electrical contacts has been investigated. Graphene was easily and quickly deposited by evaporating a few droplets of a commercial graphene solution in air. The addition of graphene reduced the friction coefficient in an Ag/Ag contact with a factor of *10. The lubricating effect was maintained for more than 150,000 cycles in a p...
متن کاملA Study of the Tribological Properties of Sputter-deposited MoSX/Cr Coatings
In this investigation, MoSx/Cr coatings were deposited by direct-current magnetron sputter onto Ck45 (AISI 1045) plain carbon steel substrates. The MoSx/Cr ratio in the coatings was controlled by sputtering the composite targets. The chemical characterization was performed using EDX (energy dispersive X-ray analysis); the structural characterization was accomplished by X-ray diffraction (XRD) s...
متن کاملMolybdenum Disulfide in Lubricant Applications – a Review
Molybdenum disulfide is one of the best known solid lubricants, and although it originally gained popularity in aerospace and military applications, it is now commonly found in a variety of lubrication applications. It is widely used in greases and specialized grease-like products known as pastes, in fluid lubricants such as automotive and industrial gear oils, in solid film lubricants includin...
